Living abroad in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, has opened my heart and eyes to new cultures, traditions, and opportunities to give back. Today was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had here, spending time with the Bribri indigenous community. This experience not only deepened my understanding of their vibrant culture but also highlighted the importance of supporting organizations like El Puente – The Bridge, which works tirelessly to empower and uplift the Bribri people.
Who Are the Bribri?
The Bribri are one of Costa Rica’s largest and most significant indigenous groups, living primarily in the lush Talamanca region. Known for their sustainable lifestyle and spiritual connection to the earth, the Bribri have a rich culture that is deeply intertwined with nature. Their matrilineal society places women at the heart of their communities, with inheritance and lineage passed down through mothers.
Cacao holds a sacred place in Bribri culture, used not just for food but also in ceremonies that connect them to their ancestors. They are also skilled in traditional crafts like weaving, basket-making, and natural medicine, which reflect their deep respect for the rainforest that surrounds them.
Our Day Giving Back
Today, my niece, Gia, her friend Nina, Nina’s mother Mirjana, and I were invited to spend the afternoon with the Bribri community to help prepare food for the holidays. It was a day filled with love, laughter, and meaningful connections.
While the food was being prepared, my niece and Nina helped with the younger kids, keeping them entertained and engaged. They also met some Bribri girls their age, and together, they bonded over art, crochet, and knitting. Watching them connect through shared creativity was heartwarming and reminded me of the universal language of friendship.
Mirjana and I served plates of delicious food to the community, soaking in the warmth and gratitude of everyone we met. The kids brought endless energy, especially one particularly rambunctious little boy who kept us all in stitches with his antics. It was a joy-filled afternoon that left all of us with full hearts.

The Role of El Puente – The Bridge
While the Bribri have a rich and beautiful culture, they also face challenges like limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. That’s where El Puente – The Bridge steps in.
El Puente is a grassroots organization based in Puerto Viejo that partners with the Bribri to provide resources and support while preserving their traditions. They offer meals, scholarships, and medical assistance to families in need, along with workshops and small business initiatives. For example, they help artisans sell handmade crafts, empowering the community economically while celebrating their cultural heritage.
By fostering self-sufficiency and respect for tradition, El Puente plays a vital role in helping the Bribri community thrive.

Reflections on Giving Back
This experience wasn’t just about giving—it was about connection and community. Being part of this day reminded me of the power of kindness and the beauty of cultures coming together. It was a joy to see the girls step out of their comfort zones, meet new friends, and embrace the moment.
Living abroad can sometimes feel isolating, but days like this remind me of the shared humanity that connects us all. I’m grateful to Mirjana for inviting us to join, and even more thankful to the Bribri community for welcoming us with open arms.
