Transportation Options from San José to Puerto Viejo

There are several ways to travel the approximately 220 kilometers (136 miles) from San José to Puerto Viejo. Each option offers its own unique experience depending on your budget, schedule, and travel style.


1. Shuttle Services

Shuttles are the easiest and most convenient way to get from San José to Puerto Viejo, especially if you’re traveling with luggage or a group.


  • Shared Shuttle:

    • Cost: Around $50-$60 USD per person.

    • Schedule: Morning and early afternoon departures.

    • Duration: Approximately 5 hours.

    • Pickup and Drop-off: Shuttles typically pick you up at your hotel or the airport and drop you off at your accommodation in Puerto Viejo.


  • Private Shuttle:

    • Cost: Starting at $200 USD for the entire vehicle.

    • Advantages: Flexible scheduling, perfect for families or larger groups.

2. Public Bus (The Mepe)

Traveling by public bus is the most affordable option and a great way to immerse yourself in local culture.


  • Bus Company: MEPE (the main operator for this route).

  • Departure Point: Caribeños Bus Terminal in downtown San José.

  • Cost: Around $12 USD per person.

  • Duration: Approximately 5-6 hours, including stops.

  • Schedule: Buses leave several times a day. It’s advisable to check the schedule in advance or book tickets online during busy seasons.

  • Tips: Arrive early to secure a good seat and keep an eye on your belongings.




3. Rental Car

If you prefer flexibility and want to explore along the way, renting a car is an excellent choice, they say. we havent rented a car yet.


  • Route:

    • Take Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park. This scenic drive offers breathtaking views of lush mountains and wildlife.

    • Once you reach Limón, follow Route 256 south to Puerto Viejo.

  • Duration: Around 4.5 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

  • Costs: Rental rates start at $40 USD per day, plus fuel. Ensure you have full insurance coverage.

  • Tips: Be cautious of potholes and occasional heavy rain.


4. Domestic Flight + Taxi

For a faster, though pricier, option, you can fly from San José to Limón and then take a taxi or shuttle to Puerto Viejo. This is supposed to be the gem, right here. The catch is... you will have to coordinate your flights down to a tee to pull this off.


  • Airline: Sansa Regional offers flights from San José to Limón.

  • Flight Duration: About 45 minutes.

  • Cost: $75-$100 USD one way.

  • From Limón to Puerto Viejo: It’s about a 1-hour taxi ride costing approximately $60 USD.


5. Taxi

This should only be done in case of an emergency. We missed our bus. Another wasnt coming back in for 4 hours because of road closures. We were exhausted and ready to get home.

  • Red Taxi: You will see the red taxis all over San Jose. Outside airport and bus stations.

  • Cost: We dont talk about bruno...like Gia would say. Expensive!!!$$$

  • Duration: 4.5 hours



    Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Travel: Morning departures are ideal to avoid arriving after dark.

  • Packing Essentials: Carry snacks, water, and entertainment for the journey. A travel pillow can make longer trips more comfortable.

  • Currency: Both Costa Rican colones and US dollars are widely accepted. Keep small bills handy for convenience.

  • Navigation Apps: If driving, use apps like Waze or Google Maps to stay on track.
